Applehead Siamese vs. Modern Siamese: Traits, Health & Care
New to the breed? Start with our complete guide to the Siamese cat, covering history, temperament and care.
An applehead Siamese is the traditional type of Siamese cat, with a round head, a sturdy body and the same blue eyes and dark points as the slender show cats.
It is not a separate breed. It is the older look of the Siamese, kept alive by breeders who prefer it to the angular modern style. This guide covers what an applehead is, how it compares with the modern type, and how to find one.
Quick Facts
| Also Known As | Traditional Siamese, Old-Style Siamese |
| Head Shape | Round, like an apple, with a shorter muzzle |
| Build | Sturdy and muscular, heavier than the modern type |
| Typical Weight | Roughly 8 to 14 pounds, with males at the upper end |
| Eyes and Coat | Blue eyes, short coat, dark points on the face, ears, legs and tail |
| Show Status | Not the standard in major registries; kept by traditional breed clubs |
What Is an Applehead Siamese?
The name comes from the head. Seen from the front, an applehead Siamese has a rounded skull and full cheeks, where the modern Siamese has a long, narrow wedge.
The body follows the same pattern. An applehead is solid and well muscled, with medium-sized ears, sturdy legs and a thicker tail. The overall look is of a strong, balanced cat with nothing exaggerated.
What has not changed is the coloring. Appleheads have the same deep blue eyes and the same pointed coat as any Siamese, in seal, blue, chocolate and lilac. Our guide to Siamese cat colors explains each one.
Where the Applehead Siamese Came From
The Siamese cats first brought to the West in the late 1800s were moderate, round-headed cats, much closer to today’s applehead than to the modern show cat.
During the 20th century, show breeders selected for a longer, finer look. By the later 1900s the major registries, including the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA), had built their Siamese standard around that slender type.
Breeders who preferred the original look kept breeding it separately. Groups such as the Traditional Cat Association maintain their own standard for it. TICA also recognizes a moderate old-style pointed cat as a separate breed called the Thai.
Applehead vs. Modern Siamese: The Differences
| Feature | Applehead (Traditional) | Modern |
| Head | Round, full cheeks | Long wedge with straight lines |
| Ears | Medium, in proportion to the head | Very large, set wide |
| Body | Sturdy and muscular | Long, slim and tubular |
| Weight | Roughly 8 to 14 pounds | Roughly 6 to 12 pounds |
| Show ring | Traditional clubs only | The standard at major shows |
| As a pet | Very common | Mostly from show breeders |
Between the two sits a middle type that some breeders call the classic Siamese, which is moderate in every feature. The labels are informal, so two breeders may use them differently.
Applehead Siamese Personality
An applehead behaves like a Siamese. Expect a talkative, clever, people-focused cat that follows you from room to room and dislikes being left alone for long.
Some owners describe appleheads as a little calmer and less intense than modern Siamese. That is personal experience, not a proven difference. Upbringing and the individual cat matter more than head shape.
Either type suits a home where someone is around much of the day. A second pet for company often helps.
Health and Lifespan
Appleheads share the health risks of the breed as a whole. These include heart conditions, an inherited eye disease called progressive retinal atrophy, a liver condition called amyloidosis, respiratory sensitivity, and dental disease.
Supporters of the traditional type argue that its moderate build avoids the problems of extreme body shapes. That is reasonable, but there is no solid research comparing the health of the two types, so treat it as an opinion.
The Siamese is a long-lived breed in both forms. See our guide to Siamese cat lifespan and health for the details. If allergies are a concern in your home, read are Siamese cats hypoallergenic before you commit.
How to Find an Applehead Siamese
The word “Siamese” alone does not tell you which type a breeder produces. A few steps make the search easier:
- Search the right terms. Breeders of this type advertise as traditional, old-style or applehead Siamese.
- Ask to see the parents. All Siamese kittens look round and soft. The adult head and body shape show only in the parents.
- Ask about health testing. A good breeder can tell you which inherited conditions the parents were screened for.
- Check shelters and rescues. Many pointed cats in rescue have the rounder, traditional look, and adoption costs far less than a breeder kitten.

Which Type Should You Choose?
Neither type is better. Choose the applehead if you like a rounder, sturdier cat with a softer expression. Choose the modern type if you prefer the sleek, dramatic look seen in the show ring.
Personality and care needs are close to identical, so the decision comes down to appearance and to finding a breeder you trust.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an applehead Siamese a different breed?
No. It is the traditional type of the Siamese breed. Major registries such as CFA and TICA use the modern type as their Siamese standard, and traditional breed clubs keep a separate standard for the applehead.
Are applehead Siamese cats rare?
Not as pets. Many pet Siamese have the rounder traditional look. They are rare in major cat shows, where the modern type is the standard.
Are applehead Siamese bigger than modern Siamese?
Usually, yes. Appleheads are heavier and more muscular, and adult males can reach about 14 pounds.
Are applehead Siamese healthier than modern Siamese?
This is debated among owners and breeders. There is no strong scientific evidence comparing the two types, and both can be healthy with good breeding and care.
Is a Thai cat the same as an applehead Siamese?
They are closely related. The Thai is a registry-recognized breed based on the old-style Siamese. Applehead is an informal label, often used for the roundest and heaviest traditional cats.
Can a modern and a traditional Siamese come from the same litter?
It is uncommon. Head and body type are inherited, and most breeders work with one type only, so litters tend to be consistent.
